Lingerie has had different roles to play throughout the ages — it used to be purely practical, to stop women getting so cold, initially worn in the 19th century. Wearing lingerie used to be considered improper, women used to "borrow" their husbands pantaloons to wear under their long skirts and to see a hint of a trouser leg under the skirts was considered in bad taste.
However, during Queen Victoria's reign, underwear quickly became considered essential, and going without was considered improper. These days lingerie ranges from plain and practical to sexy and exotic. Modern women wear sexy lingerie to look good. Old-fashioned style underwear has become popular as fashion wear.
For instance corsets were worn in Victorian times to give women the hourglass figure that was popular then. Although fashions in body shape have changed, corsets are now worn because they are considered erotic and look stunning.
Suspenders and stockings were once considered a pain to wear with their cumbersome attachments, but these days are considered sexier than tights which became popular in the 1960s.
Lingerie comes in all shapes and sizes and to best way to look sexy is buy lingerie that suits you, and brings out your best features while downplaying the parts of your body you feel less comfortable with.
Wearing lingerie that is more revealing is not necessarily sexier than lingerie that hints at what is underneath. Wearing sexy lingerie can make a woman feel good about herself.
The secret to looking good and feeling sexy in lingerie is to know what suits you. You should consider: body shape; colouring; personality; occasion.

Colouring: generally darker colours are considered sexier than lighter colours, red in particular is considered very sexy. Black is very slimming. Fair people may look washed out in dark colours though and may find paler colours suit them better.
Personality: if you have a loud, outgoing personality then bright colours and risqué styles will suit you. Quieter people may find a more subtle, elegant look suits them better and therefore looks sexier.
