Women's plus size lingerie

Not everyone is a size 10 and there is plenty of underwear out there specifically designed for the larger lady. Plus size lingerie is available in sizes from a cup size D to DD upwards and UK clothes size 16 upwards (see size chart).

People in the UK are getting bigger from generation to generation but the size of clothes has not been readjusted to reflect that. Luckily many lingerie shops and stores now sell larger (or plus size) lingerie and there are some which specialise in sexy, plus-size lingerie for larger women who want to wear attractive, stylish lingerie.

Big is beautiful and the secret to looking good is to wear lingerie that flatters your curves and reduces areas you are less comfortable with. Minimising bras can make large busts look smaller: the cup covers the whole breast and flattens it slightly.

Dark colours are slimming and black or dark plus size lingerie can be very flattering. Plus size bridal lingerie is available in all sorts of colours - usually brides go for white lingerie but it depends on the colour of the dress. Black lingerie would look inappropriate under a white dress.

Buy lingerie in a style or cut that looks good on your body shape. Everyone is different and you need to buy lingerie to suit your shape and size. Avoid wearing underwear that is too tight as this leads to bulges giving a 'spare tyre' effect.

Body-shaping underwear can give more definition and shape, but will not necessarily decrease size. Lingerie which pulls in the waist, such as corsets or body-shaping lingerie, will give a classic hourglass figure with a small waist and very full bust and hips. This is a stunning look, although not so fashionable these days.

The look you want to go for depends partly on what you are wearing over your underwear. Check to see that lingerie that looks good under your clothes also looks good when you take your clothes off, or vice versa. Plus-size lingerie that flatters your figure when you are dressed may not be so flattering when you undress whatever your size.

As with all types of clothing, comfort is important. If you need more support, ensure that your underwear gives you the support you need before you think about the style or colour. Underwired bras give more support than plain ones.

If you are pregnant then you should buy maternity lingerie which is specifically designed for pregnant women or new mothers, and caters for the fact that pregnant women change size and shape over a few months.
